Ms.Cupcakes “Best Vegan Cakes in Town”
In the busy streets of London, there is a small bakery named Ms.Cupcake, and they have some of the best-tasting cakes I have ever tasted. How do I know, I was there on January 23, 2017 (as the picture proves). Around the same time I was in their cute bakery, they released an amazing cookbook featuring some of their most famous baked delicacies. And of course, my dad knowing how much I loved baking bought me that same cookbook I am here to present to you today.
Ms.Cupcake’s “Best Vegan Cakes in Town!” As they named it has some of they easiest recipes to make fluffy, sweet, moist cakes and featuring two of my most loved recipes the “Pineapple Upside Down Cake” found on page 75 and the “Golden Syrup Cupcakes” found on page 36.
I can find some many amazing things with this incredible cookbook but like everything in life I will say there is quite some room to improve. But let’s first look at the pros and then get into the improvements that I would love to see in this cookbook just to help those have an easier time making these recipes.
Pros:
Who doesn’t love fun, crazy, and colorful pictures? Well, this cookbook has them, they are so mesmerizing to just look at. The pictures show how much fun all the employees and Ms.Cupcakes have just baking and they really inspire you to have just as much fun.
I don’t know about you but I love when cookbooks give you both measurements and weights of ingredients, because it is a fact that weights are more accurate but not everyone has access to a scale so having both ways is just perfect for both home cooks and more professional cooks.
At the beginning of the cookbook, it goes in-depth on why certain ingredients work and what to substitute them with if you don’t have access to that specific ingredient. This cookbook is from the United Kingdom they have certain ingredients we do not have in the United States, so giving us substitutes gives other people around the world the ability to make the recipes without having to get things shipped from the UK.
Gluten-free? That's not a problem. Ms. Cupcakes has thought of that, too, providing an easy and delicious way of substituting flour in recipes for a gluten-free option while still preserving that amazing soft, fluffy, and delicious flavor that the recipe offers.
Cons:
Since this cookbook was written in the United Kingdom there are words that are either written or said differently and let’s not even talk about the spelling. For example, soya is how it is pronounced in the UK, but in the States, we say soy isn’t the biggest difference but still enough to confuse someone into believing it is a totally different product.
As a chef, I’ll just say if you don’t use the weight system in your recipes you might end up with some dry cupcakes or cakes. The first time I made the pineapple upside-down recipe in the book I found out I had to add a little extra milk to get the perfect consistency for my cake. But when I weighed out the ingredients I didn’t have that problem.
Some ingredients are key to certain recipes and are not easy to find in the States. I wanted to try and make the “Golden Syrup Cupcakes” found on page 36, but I didn’t find the golden syrup till recently at an international market in Atlanta which is a few hours drive from my hometown. You can find out what golden syrup is in my “Golden Syrup Review” and how to maybe substitute it. You won’t achieve the same flavor but at least you can try the recipe in the book.
